Abstract

Objective: To assess the acceptability and evaluate the safety profile of PPIUCD.

Methods: 3468 eligible women were counselled about PPIUCD after delivery. After excluding chorioamnionitis, anaemia, PROM >24 hours and postpartum haemorrhage, 1293 willing women were inserted with CuT380A. All patients were followed up at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks.

Results: 59-70% of patients in age group 20-24 years accepted PPIUCD. Primiparous patients were more likely to accept CuT. 52.66% of insertions were post-placental. Expulsion rate was 6.185%. There was no case of perforation. Other complaints were pain abdomen, missing strings and excessive bleeding. The acceptance rate of PPIUCD in our study was 37.28% and continuation at 6 weeks was 90.64%.

Conclusion: Postpartum insertion of IUCD is an acceptable, safe, cost effective and reversible method with low complication rates and excellent safety profile.
