Potantial Role of IL-23 in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Pages 12-15)

Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune inflammatory and multisystem disease and its pathogenesis is still not completely known. We analyzed the serum levels of IL-23 by ELISA in 80 SLE patients and 72 healthy controls, and evaluated its association with the clinical findings, disease activity and laboratory parameters (e.g. serum complement values, anti-ds DNA levels).

There was no statistically significant difference between serum IL-23 levels of all lupus patients and healthy controls (p>0.05), but was significantly elevated in SLE patients with active renal disease (p: 0.01). Serum IL-23 levels were not correlated with serum complement values, anti-ds DNA levels and disease activity of SLE.

Conclusions: SLE patient studies and some animal SLE models supported the idea that IL-23 played a role in SLE pathogenesis. In our study, serum IL- 23 levels were markedly increased in active renal disease. This finding can indicate the importantance of IL-23 in the immunopathogenesis of renal lupus.
